In a significant step forward for improving healthcare access for children with thalassemia, AAHP-UK has confirmed that construction for a much-needed expansion of the thalassemia ward in Kabul will begin in January 2025. This development comes after the organisation’s latest monitoring visit in May 2024, during which representatives Hamid Kabir and Dr Wahab Ghani identified urgent requirements to enhance patient care.

Addressing Overcrowding and Safety Concerns

Currently, the existing ward is severely overcrowded, with 3-4 children often sharing a single bed during treatment sessions. This situation not only causes significant discomfort but also increases the risk of cross-infections among patients. Recognising these challenges, the new ward will provide additional space and ensure a safer, more dignified environment for the 1,253 children currently receiving treatment.

Plans and Preparations

The new thalassemia ward will be built adjacent to the existing facility on a designated site. Detailed architectural plans have already been finalised, and AAHP-UK has completed an extensive review of quotations from various construction companies to ensure quality and cost-effectiveness. With all due diligence nearing completion, the project is now ready to move into its construction phase.

Funding Status

Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of AAHP-UK’s supporters, $25,000 has already been raised to fund the construction. However, an additional $7,000 is still required to fully cover the project’s costs. Every donation plays a crucial role in ensuring the timely completion of this vital project.

The Centre for Transitional Peace for Afghanistan has been formally established as an independent platform committed to addressing the deep-rooted political, social, and historical crises in Afghanistan through inclusive national dialogue and strategic reconciliation.

This initiative aims to support the development of a new social contract — one grounded in justice, coexistence, and dignity — through a structured multi-stage process. The Centre brings together a broad range of voices, including civil society actors, thinkers, religious leaders, community elders, women’s networks, and members of the diaspora.

A New Narrative for Afghanistan

At the heart of the Centre’s work is the New Narrative for Afghanistan, a national framework built around four key phases of dialogue and consultation. Each stage focuses on a distinct theme designed to explore the past, promote empathy, and shape a shared future:

  • Stage I: Understanding the Roots – Reflecting on historical and systemic causes of conflict.
  • Stage II: Shared Pain, Shared Hope – Building solidarity through mutual recognition of suffering.
  • Stage III: A New Social Contract – Developing inclusive principles for future governance.
  • Stage IV: Pathways Forward – Outlining a roadmap for long-term peace and reform.

To support these aims, the Centre is developing an operational framework that includes a coordinating secretariat, communications and outreach functions, and mechanisms to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the process.

Strategic Objectives

The Centre is guided by five core objectives:

  • Facilitating inclusive national dialogue rooted in mutual respect and justice.
  • Promoting truth-telling and collective memory as a foundation for reconciliation.
  • Strengthening civic participation in peacebuilding and policy development.
  • Supporting regional and international engagement in line with peaceful transition goals.
  • Laying the groundwork for long-term structures that ensure follow-through and impact.

Backed by a growing coalition of advisors and institutional partners, the Centre operates independently of political factions and prioritises neutrality, inclusivity, and public trust.

Looking Ahead

The Centre for Transitional Peace offers a timely and strategic opportunity to build toward a more just and stable future. Rather than serving as a temporary project, it is intended as a long-term platform for dialogue, vision, and collective responsibility. By fostering empathy, recognising lived experience, and working collaboratively, the Centre seeks to support meaningful transformation — for the people of Afghanistan and for those committed to peace and dignity everywhere.
