My expertise

Momenah Yari is a veteran human rights advocate, legal expert, and women’s rights leader who has spent more than two decades shaping Afghanistan’s civic and legal landscape. A former commissioner of the Independent Election Commission and long-time champion of gender equality, she brings deep legal and policy insight to her role as Legal and Rights Advisor at the Centre for Transitional Peace.

Originally from Maidan Wardak, Ms Yari earned a Bachelor of Law (LLB) and a Master’s in Social Sciences from the University of Peshawar. She also completed specialised training in human rights, CEDAW implementation, entrepreneurship, and international management across Sweden, Malaysia, Singapore, and the UK. She has served in leading positions within the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, and the Independent Election Commission, where she worked to institutionalise women’s participation in legal, political, and civil society spaces.

Now based in Germany, Ms Yari is Deputy Director of the Afghanistan Organisation for Development of Human Rights and works closely with global bodies including the International Criminal Court and the Victims Rights Working Group. She remains a leading voice in Afghan women’s networks and international human rights circles.

She is fluent in Persian, Pashto, English, Urdu, and German.
